As I've mentioned before, I'm in quite a few communities and signed up on a lot of sites. This includes Twitter, Jaiku, Pownce, and Tumblr - all different, but in some ways much the same. Right now I'm pretty much tracking what happens through Twitter only, through IM (Pidgin). I tried using IMified, but the bot for gtalk died for me or something.
Is anyone using something to post to multiple sites? I know of a couple, but they're not for Windows (I'm on XP Pro, SP2). Would that be like a reverse aggregator?
Have you seen Ravelry? It's an invite-only community for people who knit and crochet, and they slowly add more people each day. You add your name to a list, and they send you a link when it's open for you to join. In case you're not willing to wait, they have an "antsy" list that shows you where you are in line. It was started by a husband and wife from the Boston, MA area (that's kind of local to me). They wanted a community and a way to keep track of what they had and wanted... and I think they've done a great job so far.
I put my name on the list sometime around the 20th of February this year, and received my invite late on the 23rd. I've been a member since February 24th. Besides the community, there'syour own personal database for yarn (aka your stash), needles, projects (in-progress, queued, and favorites), as well as a library (books, magazines, PDFs, etc).
Once you have your "notebook" filled in, you can look through the people and groups - there are a ton of different groups, from Men Who Knit to Geek knitters to knitters in your area (probably), and... well, you'll have to look around.
If you're a knitter or a crocheter, check it out. It's worth waiting for the invitation, and it's a very active community.
I found myself reading my own writing the other day. This might sound like an obvious thing to some people, but it started me thinking.
I've been online since 1997, starting with my account on Geocities and a little space on a site owned by a local graphic designer in Nashua, NH (US). I really had no idea what I was doing, but I started learning and liked writing HTML, and seeing it turn into something on a page. That was back when Yahoo had a gray background and dialup speed was the norm.

In July of 2001 I started writing on Xanga (and still do, as liquid), then in May of 2003 on this site (which was revamped in 2006). While searching for posts to put on a newer site (coming soon), I decided to scroll to the bottom of my Xanga archive, to the oldest entries. I had forgotten about a lot of what I wrote (it was almost seven years ago), but it was like reading someone else's writing. There were thoughts and comments that I remember writing, and others that seem like they belonged to someone else. It was an interesting snapshot into my own life.
Has anyone else had this experience? Things like this also make me wonder about the generations from mine and younger. This is the everyday experience now, to share with an online community or group as much as write down thoughts in a private journal.
It'll be interesting to re-read this entry in five or ten years, with all the changes and everything that's happened in-between.
So you've all heard of del.icio.us, right? I did too, and signed up for an account about 18 months ago... and let it just sit there. At the time, it didn't pull me in, but that was then.
For some reason, I decided to give it another try (probably because of Sean) about a week or so ago, and now I'm plowing through my 1900+ bookmarks to find the gems and weed out the garbage. It would be nice to be able to tag multiple links with the same tags (not just rename them). Of course, I really like the FireFox extensions and the ability to work with the bookmarks in the sidebar.
This isn't my first foray into social bookmarking (and won't be my last): I used Simpy for a while, but then stopped for some reason. Looking at it again today, it's got some cool features that I forgot about.
What do you use, and why? I know del.icio.us and Simpy and RawSugar, but have only used the first two. Looking at it, there may be another signup in the near future...
In the past 10+ years, I've signed up for a lot of things on the Internet. I have webmail, shopping accounts, banking, financial stuff... much like a lot of people. Then came social networks and community sites.
I think it was geocities first, then came Xanga (Bianca, anyone?), then more. And More. And More... Then I realized that there's not enough content generated (or time) for me to do all of them.
For those of you with more than a couple of accounts, what would be your "core" places to use for posting content?
