i finally remembered the milk

Yes, a little slow to get on board, but I finally signed up for an account at Remember the Milk. I didn't think I had all that much to put on it, but apparently there was more than a few things to get organized.

If you haven't used it, try it out... It allows you to manage your to-do lists in a pretty useful way. It's not over-bearing and it seems to have some decent integration (including gmail through a Firefox add-on - summed up on the RTM blog). You can also print out your lists and subscribe to them as RSS/Atom feeds.

Oh, and you can share tasks with other users, so there's a good collaborative feel to it. That could be useful for projects where people aren't necessarily in direct contact. You know, in case you actually *need* to remember the milk.

One last thing... Does anyone else think of Sesame Street when they see it? "A loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a stick of butter..."

sessions and seamonkeys

Since upgrading Seamonkey, I haven't been able to use session management to bring back the pages I was on. Yes, I could try to remember to bookmark whatever I was using, but there's no history to the tabs. It's just as lame as IE7 now, and I don't like it.

Does anyone know of a way to get it working? I've been Googling it and tried to install the "latest" version of it, but no luck (script not found off of the .xpi). This is on Windows XP, Seamonkey version 1.1.7. I might try to play with the installer, but I don't want to break anything else in the process.

Maybe the next version will have it built in like Firefox does. That would be nice.

drupal 5.3 is in place

It is done.

I did the upgrade from Drupal 4.7 to v5.3 yesterday, and finished up some of it this morning. It went smoother than I thought it would, and I have to say it a definite improvement. On the administration side, the admin pages seem to be cleaner and easier to navigate, as well as being more helpful. Cheers to Drupal for making the process as easy as it is.

To be sure it went well, I actually remembered to RTFM on upgrading. All of the old files were removed, and the new ones put in their place. This was especially important for the modules, most of which would've been broken. If anything, the site seems to be working better.

Next step: re-doing the look of the site. I'm using a theme called NewsFlash from RoopleTheme (in green, of course). Once I get PHPTemplate down a bit more I should be able to put something decent together.

back it up, back it all up.

It's bad, but I don't have a really solid backup schedule for my system. There's plenty in place for my "work" system, but not for the one I'm writing this on now.

The closest thing I have to a schedule is running SyncToy once in a while to get my whole profile folder (I'm using Windows XP) onto a separate system and a separate HD. Far from perfect (no image), but at least I have the data.

If funds weren't a limiting factor, I'd just buy a couple of 500GB drives and put them into a beige box running linux (like Ubuntu!) and run backups to that, but unfortunately... I don't have a wealthy benefactor to help with that.

There's box.net, but I feel like that would be limited. I could also try the all-too-shaky "save it to a mounted gmail volume" but that's more than a little scary for important stuff.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a free/cheap solution to back up my system (and possibly one other)? Maybe I'll just have to suck it up and buy a new, fresh HD...

it's del.icio.us and helpful

So you've all heard of del.icio.us, right? I did too, and signed up for an account about 18 months ago... and let it just sit there. At the time, it didn't pull me in, but that was then.

For some reason, I decided to give it another try (probably because of Sean) about a week or so ago, and now I'm plowing through my 1900+ bookmarks to find the gems and weed out the garbage. It would be nice to be able to tag multiple links with the same tags (not just rename them). Of course, I really like the FireFox extensions and the ability to work with the bookmarks in the sidebar.

This isn't my first foray into social bookmarking (and won't be my last): I used Simpy for a while, but then stopped for some reason. Looking at it again today, it's got some cool features that I forgot about.

What do you use, and why? I know del.icio.us and Simpy and RawSugar, but have only used the first two. Looking at it, there may be another signup in the near future...

rick james for halloween: I'm a super freak...

We had a costume party at work, and the winner of the best costume was... well, you just have to see the video (or at least click on the picture to see it).

This should be up on YouTube soon, but in the meantime... it's here.

UPDATE: it's on YouTube now.

trying Winamp again

It's probably been four years since I used Winamp, and I decided to try it again as of this afternoon (more on that later).

Still pretty much the same look, and it still seems small-ish and quick. Of course, compared to iTunes (especially the later versions), it seems a lot faster. There are also different features that I realized I miss, like the Windowshade mode. The whole app shrinks to the size of a title bar, which is nice when I like having as much screen real estate available as possible. Yes, iTunes has a minimal mode, but it's too blocky.

More on it later once I've used it for more than two hours. In the meantime, I'm wondering about the different media players people use. I have several (just on my Windows XP machine): WMP, Media Player Classic, VLC player, Winamp, iTunes, and last.fm. Any other suggestions, besides getting rid of some?

registering is disabled for now

This could be attributed to being a Drupal site or not, but I've had a lot of issues with Spam, through comments and trackbacks and user registrations. Since a lot of the user registrations seem to be completely bunk (and since I have about 5 "real" readers), I've turned off registrations.

If you'd like an account, you can contact me through my user page.
